OUR ACTIVITIES

Training

Our Training Center offers a wide portfolio of STCW training courses, industry recommended courses, tailor made seminars for licensed Deck and Engine Officers, as well as for Shore Based Staff.

In addition, competence assessments, involving ship handling, cargo management and engineering related skills can be conducted for newly promoted Officers or for Senior Officers first time with the company.

The ATHINA Maritime Learning and Development Center is being audited by the DNV/GL and the Maltese Maritime Administration to ensure that all STCW-related and quality management requirements are fulfilled.

A network of knowledge experts and Trainers with extensive seafaring know-how and experience are engaged in providing courses of high educational value. The use of simulators is carried out in line with the learning objectives, the training methodology and lesson planning of each course. The combined use of bridge, engine and cargo handling simulator yields additional benefits to maximize the cognitive benefits for the trainees.

The Training Courses can be broadly divided into the following categories:

  • Approved STCW training courses.
  • Courses to meet industry Competence Standards, such as SIGTTO LNG Training, Oil Tankers Cargo Handling Simulator Training, Ship Handling, Safety Leadership, etc.
  • Courses that provide underpinning knowledge and skills on new technologies, such as Ballast Water Treatment Systems, Electronically Controlled Diesel Engines, Marine Fuel and Lubricating Oils Handling, etc.
  • Practical courses such as MMA Welding, Lathes, etc.

STCW Training

Training leading to Certificates of Proficiency, Certificates of Competence and Documentary Evidence is provided in accordance with the Quality Standards required by Regulation I/8 of the STCW and Code.

The STCW Convention is the most important legal instrument governing the training and qualification of seafarers, and providing the minimum required competence standards. Competence is meant as the ability to perform particular tasks and duties to the standard of performance expected onboard a ship.

Refresher training and assessment is also provided for Officers wishing to establish continued professional competence and continue to qualify for seagoing service.

All available courses have been designed to be delivered according to the IMO Model Courses and the applicable requirements of the STCW and Code.

Industry Competence Standards & Training

Certain sectors of the shipping industry, in particularly, the oil, chemical and liquefied gas sectors have adopted competence standards for Officers serving on the respective type of ships, representing best practices of training and assessment, in terms of the syllabus, the acquired knowledge and learning techniques.

These standards that are being subject to constant change and adaptation are recommended to be embraced by the Officers concerned.

Training on New Shipboard Technologies

The new installations and retrofits of new technologies, such as ballast water treatment systems, exhaust gas treatment systems, the prevalence of camshaft less main engines, the dual fuel engines, the use of gas or low flash point fuels, and the employment of techniques and instruments helping to improve ships’ energy efficiency constitute new areas of training and familiarization, that our Training Center gradually incorporates in its activities.
